Notes From President, Tom Holm

“Ding Darling Sampler”

Just published: a new anthology of the editorial cartoons of J.N. “Ding” Darling. The book is entitled “A Ding Darling Sampler” and contains a selection of 200 of Darling’s best editorial cartoons covering a wide range of subjects. The cartoons are as applicable today as when they were drawn, the better part of a century ago.

The book costs $14.95 plus mailing. It is available through Publications Distributions at the University of Iowa 1-800-235-Book or 391-384-3808. (M-F 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.)

Darling believed that for conservation organizations to be most effective, they had to work together. This strategy led to the founding of the National Wildlife Federation of which he was founder and the first President.

(The above was taken from an article published in the Iowa Environmental Council News Bulletin)

Board Member Makes The News

Many of you may have seen the picture of our Board Member, Jim Durbala, in the Des Moines Register’s January 23 sports page. It appears he was demonstrating how to move a trout from the lake to the freezer in one motion. Nice job Jim!

With Our Sympathy

We morn the loss of Paul Tuttle and Paul Stadlman, who recently passed away. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the families of these two fine gentlemen.

Omission From Last Newsletter

The expression of thanks for stripping and waxing the floor omitted the name of Bill Muilenburg, who was very much involved. I apologize for the omission, Bill.

Quips to Make Life Smoother & Lighter

  • Life is not about how fast you run, or how high you climb, but how well you bounce.
  • Life is simpler when you plow around the stumps.
  • Remember, a bumble bee is faster than a riding lawn mower.
  • You don’t have to worry about the world coming to an end today. It’s already tomorrow in Australia. (Author: Charles Schultz)
  • Don’t worry if you’re a kleptomaniac, you can always take something for it.
