From President, Tom Holm
Bottle Bill Again
Under Fire
There is, again, an effort by a few to kill the Anti-litter,
(Bottle), Bill. Don’t let this happen! Contact Your legislators.
Iowa’s Bottle Bill works. About 1.4 billion containers, nearly
500 per person, are redeemed annually that might otherwise be
littering Iowa and filling our landfills.
This program is entirely self-funded and no tax dollars are
involved. Consumers pay a nickel deposit and get it back when
they return the container. The distributors pay, the refunding
entity, a penny for each container redeemed.
While the bill works, it could be improved to include all the
beverages in aluminum, plastic and glass containers. And, after
more than 25 years, an increase in the amount paid the redeemer
is due.
The bottle bill has been effective in litter control, is self
funding,
increases recycling and is supported by a vast majority of
Iowans. And, there is not one documented case of a health
problem associated with bottle/can redemption. The redeemer can
refuse to accept dirty and/or wet cans as stated in the current
law.
