Notes
From President, Tom Holm
The Late Pope
Endorsed Land Stewardship.
I am not Catholic and it’s been a long time, but I still
remember the Pope’s message when he visited Iowa. I was very
impressed that one of his topics was being a good steward of the
land. Following are a few of his quotes from that visit:
In his homily, John Paul said the rural setting at harvest time
reminded him of the words that are a part of every Mass as the
priest prepares for communion, also called Eucharist: “Blessed
are you, Lord God of all creation, through your goodness we have
this bread to offer which earth has given and human hands have
made.”
John Paul praised the humans present whose hands work the soil
and exhorted them to be good stewards of God’s precious earth.
“The land is God’s gift entrusted to people from the very
beginning,” the Pope said, “It is God’s gift, given by a loving
creator as a means of sustaining the life which he had created.”
“On your farms you are close to God’s nature; in your work on
the land you follow the rhythms of the seasons.” (Oct. 4, 1979,
at St. Patrick’s church, Irish Settlement, Ia.)
“You who are farmers today are stewards of a gift from God that
was intended for the good of all humanity.” (Oct. 4, 1979, at
Living History Farms, Urbandale, Ia.)
Deer Test Negative for CWD in Iowa
None of the 4,579 Iowa Whitetail deer tested for chronic wasting
disease (CWD) during the 2004-2005 season showed any signs of
the disease. Samples were collected from all 99 counties, but
with more frequency along the Mississippi river because of the
prevalence of the disease in Wisconsin and Illinois. |
