Notes
From President, Tom Holm
How the League
Got Its name:
An article addressing this topic appeared in the Newsletter
about a year ago, but since we have added a sizeable number of
new members I thought it worthwhile to address it again.
Most Ikes know that the Izaak Walton League was founded in 1922,
how many know how it got the League name?
Credit goes to Preston Bradley, a preacher from Chicago and one
of the League’s 54 founders. In 1921 Bradley traveled to England
and visited the tomb of Izaak Walton, a 17th century writer who
penned “The Complete Angler”. Upon his return he was asked by a
friend, Will Dilg, to attend a meeting of sportsmen interested
in forming a group to combat water pollution and other
environmental problems. The group met January 1922 and laid out
their vision. At the end of the meeting the founders asked,
“What are we going to call ourselves?” With memories of Izaak
Walton still lingering, Bradley proposed, “Why not call
ourselves the Izaak Walton League of America.” A motion was
made, it carried unanimously, and the League was born.
Izaak Walton, the League’s namesake and 17th century author of
“The Complete Angler”, has long been considered the patron Saint
of fly fishing, but he may soon become “an Official Saint” if
several Episcopal priests and laymen in the US can get him added
to the church Calendar of Saints. The Rev. Dr. Clayton l.
Morris, Liturgical Officer of the Episcopal Church center in New
York says Walton’s book, first published in 1653, is still the
definitive guide to the sport of fishing and “we feel that it is
time Izaak Walton was given his day to be celebrated with
special services in honor of him and his passion for fishing.”
It should be noted that in later years, Bradley expressed regret
at using Izaak Walton for the League’s name because he felt that
the name created a certain resistance for the League to
overcome. He felt that it so exclusively identified the League
with a man who loved to fish that a lot of people got the idea
that it was just another group of fishermen who wanted to get
together to have a banquet and talk about fishing. After reading
the preceding paragraph it is easy to see why one might come to
that conclusion. |
