Notes
From President, Tom Holm
Deer Herd
Reduction Bill Passes House & Senate
At this writing it is not known if the Governor has signed the
bill, but all indications are that he will. The bill, senate
file 206, is designed to reduce the state’s deer herd by 25%
over the next two years.
The insurance industry indicated that 18,000 deer/vehicle
accidents costing them an estimated $60 million occurred in
2004.
The bill requires nonresidents buying an antlered or anysex
license also buy an antlerless only tag for $100 since reducing
the female deer population reduces the herd. It also expands the
HUSH program, authorizes the DNR to establish special antlerless
only seasons in counties where paid antlerless licenses remain
available and requires the regulations of captive farm deer to
continue to be regulated by the department of agriculture and
Land Stewardship, but hunting preserves that contain whitetail
deer are to be regulated by the DNR.
Quail Hunting
Resolution Made at State Convention
The Bobwhite Quail
population has been decreasing for many years in Iowa. If and
when you locate a covey it will likely be very small.
The Iowa Division, Izaak Walton League of America meeting April
30, 2005 at Davenport, Iowa RESOLVE that the Dept. of Natural
Resourses, and the Natural resource Conservtion Service, Dept.
of agriculture make every effort to assist in restoring and
improving the Quail population.
SPECIAL NOTICE
There is a long
standing policy voted by the Board of Directors that card
playing in the dining room must be suspended during the program.
Recently some players have moved to the dining room, to avoid
the smoke in the bar. It is a very difficult job to schedule 50
programs a year and we need to give our volunteer speakers our
attention and respect if we expect them to return.
If you choose to play in the dining room to avoid the smoke you
will need to take a break during the program or, if you wish to
continue, you can go to our smoke free, well lighted library.

Applications
for Board of Directors Now Available.
Do you have
complaints on how the chapter is being operated or ideas on how
the chapter operation could be improved? Well, don’t just sit
around the dining table and complain, become involved in the
decision making process by becoming a candidate for the Board of
Directors.
Or, maybe you would just like to be more involved in the
organization. Either way now is the time to take action and make
application to become a member of the Board of Directors.
The nominating committee has been formed and is accepting
applications during the month of May with interviews beginning
June 7.
See Jay Samuelson, nominating committee chair to pick up an
application. (The other committee members are: Keith Gaar, John
Roomer, Cliff Rooney and Roger Schoonover.)
Volunteers
Needed
Volunteers are needed to help with the Family Fish day, at
Water Works park on June 4, 7 AM to 3 PM.

Crappiethon
Report
I was told that
this years outing at Lake Rathbun was filled with blasts of hot
air. I don’t know if they were referring to that provided by
Mother Nature or the fishermen. I’ll give them the benefit of
the doubt and assume they were referring to that which came from
nature since I know, at least Saturday, a small gale was
blowing.
Although it was too windy for the usual bond fire everyone
reported having a great time with great camaraderie, food and
fishing. It was reported that the fishing was great, but the
catching was sub par.
It seems like it was a trip for presidents with Jay Samuelson,
past President, catching the largest fish, albeit it had
whiskers, and Tom Holm, current President, the largest crappie.
