Notes
From President, Tom Holm
New Conservation Education Fund Established
After Ding
Darling’s death in 1962, the J.N. “Ding” Darling Foundation was
created to continue some of his favorite projects. For example,
for forty years the foundation provided annual Ding Darling
scholarships for wildlife students at Iowa State University.
Now the Darling Foundation is dissolving. The Iowa Natural
Heritage Foundation, (INHF), has created a new Ding Darling
Conservation Education Fund to keep the Darling name and spirit
alive in Iowa through a variety of education activities. The
Ding Darling Foundation Pledged up to $100,000 if INHF could
raise an additional $100,000 in 2004 to establish this fund.
In 2004, your Board of Directors felt this was in line with our
interests and made a pledge to contribute. We recently received
the following letter of thanks from the President of INHF:
“I’m writing in regards to your chapter’s pledge commitment to
the Ding Darling Conservation Education Fund.
Your pledge in May 2004 worked as intended! It helped us to
reach our goal of raising $100,000 by year end in order to
receive an additional $100,000 from the J.N. Ding Darling
Foundation and establish the Ding Darling Conservation Education
Fund at INHF. This fund will endow the Ding Darling scholarships
at Iowa State University, add a college-student crew of Ding
Darling interns at INHF to restore and manage Iowa prairies and
woodlands each summer, and support future educational projects
in Ding’s name.
In fact, we exceeded our funding goal. The Darling Foundation
provided $103,220 in January 2005, so that the fund now stands
at $218,990 in gifts and pledges.
We publicized the Izaak Walton League’s commitment on our
website and in many presentations, grant requests, and appeals
throughout 2004. We worked hard in 2004 to get the Des Moines
Register to cover this campaign, and they finally chose to do an
editorial column about Ding in February 2005.
Thank you for your excellent assistance and leadership.
Your pledge really helped to jump-start this funding campaign
and was important to securing other major grants and individual
gifts.”

Ike’s
Bass/Crappie Outing Summation
57 members and
guests braved the winds and cold on May 13 – 15 at Lake Rathbun.
The following members need to be thanked for their part in
making the weekend a success: Fred Noon and Rod Kent for making
the necessary arrangements; Wayne Roshau for pulling our cooker
to the campsite and returning it to the club; Joe Gavin for
picking up the steaks and general help at the weigh in and steak
fry; and Wayne Roshua, J. B. Ouverson, and Bob Jackson for
cooking the steaks.
Also thanks to Ike Patterson from Sportsman’s Warehouse for
donating two $25 gift certificates for the fishing contest.
First place for largest crappie, 11 ¾ inches (a little smaller
than reported in last newsletter) went to Tom Holm. First place
for largest fish, any species, 18 inch catfish went to Jay
Samuelson.
Water Water
Everywhere, Water Water Not a Drop to Spare.
This phrase from
a popular poem has more relevance than one might think.
Of all
life-sustaining elements, water is the most essential. Only
earth of all the planets, that we know of, has water for the
support of life as we know it. A person can survive only 8 to 10
days without water. Water covers about three-quarters of the
earth’s surface, but 97.4% is salt water and 1.8% is frozen.
Fresh water constitutes only 0.8% of the total water supply. The
percent of fresh water that is still uncontaminated is unknown.
Water is a needed gift, appreciate it. Water is precious, use it
wisely.
