Notes
From President, Tom Holm
Your Stomach &
Global Warming
When thinking about global warming most people think of curbing
emissions from cars and power plants. But did you know that the
production and transportation of food consumed by the typical
American generates nearly as much carbon dioxide as the average
car? The standard kilogram of food consumed today in the United
States travels 1,500 miles from farm to plate.
Peter Hoffman, national chair of the Chefs Collaborative says,
If you want to reduce your environmental impact, in particular
your carbon dioxide emissions, then the less fossil fuels that
are used to get food to you, the better. You can start simply by
going to a farmer’s market, buying something locally produced
and incorporating it into your regular shopping.”
Third Annual Family Fishing day a Big Success
(From Rod Kent, Chairman of This Event)
The Izaak Walton League/Dahls Foods/Outdoors Dan Family fishing
day at Waterworks Park, June 4, was a great success. An
estimated 4500 children (ages 5 to 15) and, including all the
adults, an estimated total of 9,000 attended the event. The
number of people may be impressive, but the important thing was
the quality of the event which was made possible by our
co-sponsor, Dahl’s Foods and the many other businesses and
people contributing to the success of the event.
THANK YOU TO: Our co-sponsor, Dahl’s Foods and thanks to
the following contributing businesses: The Tackle Shack, Line-X
Spray on Bed Liners, Wells Blue Bunny, The Struve Subway Family,
Sportsman’s Warehouse, Zebco and Quantum fishing gear, Plano
Tackle Boxes, Tanis Holmquist with Iowa Reality, Berkley Power
Bait, Bike World, Pathway Church, Stoney Creek Inn, Mau Marine,
Mike Brewington with Iowa Beverage, Kin Folks BBQ, and a special
thanks to Johnston Bait & Tackle for again providing the worms
at cost and donating the worm cups. There also were many other
businesses that donated door prizes.
