Young Ikes
Attend Youth Convention
Approximately 50 young Ikes from across the country met in
Springfield, Mo., during the League’s annual national
convention, for their own Youth Convention.
The Youth convention consisted of three days of education and
conservation kicked off by two workshops that dealt with
people’s effects on the economy and the environment. They saw
first hand how everyday actions affect water quality and
wildlife habitat. Later they had the opportunity to survey
wildlife in Missouri’s famous caves.
The highlight of the convention seemed to be when they teamed
with the City of Springfield, James River Basin Partnership, and
Watershed Committee for the Ozarks for a two day community
service project consisting of a stream cleanup at South Creek
and storm-drain stencil around downtown Springfield. The kids
removed close to 250 pounds of trash from South Creek. (Sounds a
little like our River Run garbage Grab, doesn’t it?)
Apparently these were children of Ike’s members attending the
National convention, but I’m not aware if any were children of
our chapter’s attendees. However, their efforts did not go
unnoticed by the local Springfield media. They were featured on
the business page of the July 21st Ozark News-Leader.
The above was gleaned from an IWLA press release written by
Debbie Veliz, National Youth Convention Coordinator. (Someone
needs to tell her about our excellent Uncle Ikes program led by
Mike Roland)
