Blue-Green
Algae Can Pose Health Risks
Blue-Green Algae (BGA) are microscopic organisms naturally
present in lakes and streams. They are usually present in low
numbers, but can grow quickly in shallow undisturbed surface
water receiving a lot of sunlight. When this occurs “blooms” can
form discoloring the water or produce floating rafts or scum on
the water’s surface. Usually these blooms only occur during the
summer in Iowa. Some BGA produce toxins and can pose a health
risk to people and animals when exposed to large enough
quantities by swallowing, contact with skin or inhaling airborne
droplets.
However, contact with water not visibly affected by BGA is not
expected to cause health problems. If the water is visibly
discolored (blue-green, yellow, brown or red) or has surface
scum, you should suspect the presence of BGA and avoid contact.

New Deer
Hunting Regulations Finalized
The final review of Iowa’s deer seasons was completed in early
August. A number of changes were made, but the most notable are:
A new special anterless November hunt; Center-fire rifles will
be allowed during the extended January anterless season in the
southern two tiers of counties.
A noteworthy change made by the DNR is to include, in one
booklet, (2005-06 Iowa Hunting and Trapping Regulations), the
deer and fall turkey instructions, upland game seasons and bag
limits, general hunting regulations and the 2006 spring turkey
instructions. This booklet will be available at license vendors
and DNR offices statewide and the regulations are available on
the internet at
www.iowadnr.com. (I’m sure most of
the new deer regulations will be discussed at our Sept. 27
program.)
Hillbilly
Auction is October 4, 2005
Hey don’t forget this fun filled beneficial event. Clear the cob
webs off some of those seldom used or seen items and gather them
up for the auction. Not only is it fun, but you may even find a
real bargain or two. Remember the net proceeds from this event
are used to sponsor activities of the Uncle Ikes.
Thank You to:
To Wishbone and Jim Durbala for repairing the Archery/Deer
Stand.
