Protecting
Your Identity (cont’d from 10/18)
Have only your initials and last name printed on your checks. A
thief will not know if you sign your checks using your initials
or first name, but the bank will know how you sign your checks.
When making credit card payments DON’T put your complete acct. #
on the check. Instead, just use the last four numbers. The
credit card company knows the rest of the number.
Never have your SS# printed on your checks.
Photocopy both sides of items in your wallet such as license,
credit cards etc. That way you will know what you had in your
wallet, account numbers and telephone numbers to call if your
wallet is ever lost or stolen. File a police report immediately
in the jurisdiction where your credit cards, etc. were stolen to
establish evidence of diligence. Call the 3 national credit
reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on
your name and SS#. The numbers to call are: Equifax,
1-800-525-6285; Experian, 1-888-397-3742; Trans Union,
1-800-680-7289; Social Security Administration (fraud line),
1-800-269-0271. |
