Notes from President, Tom Holm

The following excerpts from the Des Moines Register’s Website is, I believe, worth reiterating to our members.

As thousands of Iowans spread fall fertilizer on their lawns, Iowa lake groups and environmentalists are hoping they will join in using a no-phosphorus fertilizer.  The groups are waging a public relations war on phosphorus, a fertilizer ingredient that is the single biggest cause of lake mucking algae blooms.  While Iowa groups try persuasion, Minnesota this year outlawed the use of high-phosphorus fertilizers for residential use.  Meanwhile Iowa’s waters have some of the highest phosphorus levels in the world, said John Downing, an Iowa State University scientist studying 132 Iowa lakes.  Downing said the state’s residents are applying phosphorus-rich fertilizer everywhere “even though we don’t need it”.  It’s the issue for lake water quality””, he said.  “Phosphorus is correlated with all the bad things we talk about at lakes.  Toxic algae.   How bad they look, how bad they smell.  Bacteria problems.”

Many local stores sell low or no-phosphorus fertilizers under names such as Lake ‘N Lawn Saver, Renaissance and Milorganite.  Statewide, many lawn services also have switched to no-phosphorus fertilizers.

Member Spends Time With Celebrity Sportsman

Rod Kent, Des Moines chapter member (and one of our Tuesday night bartenders) had the honor of driving Tony Dean over 750 miles to speaking engagements in Cedar Falls, Clear Lake, Fort Dodge, Storm Lake and Sioux City, where he addressed various sportsmen groups on current government issues and policies impacting sportsmen nationwide.  Tony Dean is host and producer of “Tony Dean Outdoors”, a regional television show that airs across the upper Midwest.  He also produces, “Dakota Back Roads”, a daily radio show airing across both Dakotas and portions of surrounding states.  His TV and radio shows have won over 160 regional and national programming awards.  He is also a member of the North Dakota and National Fresh water Fishing  Halls of Fame and has received numerous conservation awards at local, state, regional and national levels as well as being past Honorary President of the Izaak Walton League.  Rod felt it an honor to spend that much time traveling with a celebrity sportsman such as Tony Dean.

Door prizes

After each program, we give away a couple of door prizes.  In order to have a chance to win, you need to print your name on the back of your dinner ticket before turning it in.  Winners are determined via a drawing from that night’s dinner tickets.  Note:  We are always in need of door prizes for the weekly drawing.  See the Program Chairman, Sonny Satre, if you can donate an item.
