Dr. Roy
Overton Resigns Post
Dr. Overton resigned his official posts in leadership including
lobbyist for the State division, National directorship and chair
of the Environmental Health and Air Committee due to a conflict
of ideas and values in the direction the National Ikes were
moving.
In a memo he sent 11/29/05 to our president, Fred Baumann, he
said, “I am a life member of the Izaak Walton League and am glad
to be a member of such a wonderful group of friends and sports
persons. I joined the Ikes for hunting and fishing and also the
activities to protect these programs. The Ikes were also
involved in clean water, clean air, habitat, wise stewardship of
the land and stop erosion, and the value of Woodlands and open
spaces.
The last several years the Ikes nationally has been concerned
with population and its effects on all these issues. They call
this sustainability! I went along with the issue, but discussed
this nationally in general terms and told them to stop the
political issues right there and not be involved with politics
of birth control and abortion. For the last few years the
National Ikes has gotten into these issues and even though the
delegates and resolutions committee decried efforts to limit
global population, the National office has continued its slow
pressure to involve us into the issue.” |

“We have plenty of
work to do without getting specific on global birth control and
family planning. As a Catholic I cannot lead our legislative
efforts in this direction. I felt I needed to resign my official
posts in leadership since the National office went ahead with
these programs despite dissent from major groups of Ike members.
I will always be an Ike. I do not want to fight this out as I
would not wish to foment more problems with our already falling
membership. We sports persons need to stick together and
continue our outdoor programs and protect our habitat and air
quality.”
While there was more said in the memo it was necessary for me
edit out some due to space constraints.”
